The Creation Story Revisited: Genesis of the Delta

                    in the beginning
                    God’s mighty breath
swept over the wide chaotic water . . .
                    it hovered
like a divine dragonfly above the great abyss
then commanded the river to flow into the dark sea . . .
next He scooped out a hand full
of delta clay for His potter’s wheel
                    spun His Adam upright
                    breathing alluvial life into him—
(a word that even sounds primordial)
                    finally, God said
                    here, how good
                    this soil, this eden . . .

but how long will we till this delta land,
how long our share in its web of life
