Conundrum

The crow scribbles long lists with the twig

along the black power lines. When

was the season we knew

our entwinement, lip on lip

in the dark of the big ship on the small lake

of decades we have swum through

sticky notes everywhere to Rome and Paris

Abaco crammed full of astonishments

or when you fainted and I beside you

the cold floor in Costa Rica and who did we have

but each other my body on yours and you

breathed me through panic, activating

the current that kept your heart ticking

so we would not lose a second like those black birds

that still bomb my window then sit in the trees.

Always the conundrum of connection and why

a crow is a crow is a crow with a twig.
