Andy Gambell

Copperhead

the copperhead moves into tall grass

shining iridescence

   of gold and darkness

like creamy coffee

   a slippery silky dream

half forgotten

but half remembered too

i wouldn’t have been surprised

if he had spoken

should i follow him?

      should i get a gun?

should i be humbled?

if he offered me an apple

i would have knocked the dirt

from my boots

placed my hat in my hands

and kindly accepted it

whatever would follow

would follow
