The Waiting Sky

A thunderstorm arrives,

with a fury that defies physics.

Flowers are ripped up

and tossed aside

like abandoned toys.

No stars can be seen.

They’re like philosophers,

outside this unpleasant reality,

and unconcerned with

such mundane matters.

Perhaps, far off, in another world,

life is as peaceful

as a children’s lullaby,

but there’s duplicity

in that ambiguous sky.

It has in it something

we think of as eternity,

and it’s waiting patiently,

merely for you and me to die.

George Freek’s poetry has appeared in numerous journals and reviews. His poem “Night Thoughts” was recently nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
