The Landscape of the Soul

On a painting by Wu Daozi

As winter is still distant,

and blossoms appear on apple trees,

I tend my garden.

It’s easy to love nature,

in the summer,

but soon the birds will leave.

They’re already anxious to depart.

The stars will still shine

somewhere every day,

but at night

when I’m weary to the bone,

and the birds have gone

with their colors and their songs,

it almost breaks my heart.
